Journeying into the heart of Mexico in 2014, Clarke found herself in the center of a collision of outrage and time-honored celebrations surrounding the Day of the Dead. Her medium-format black and white film photographs capture the nationwide mourning of 43 missing students along with ritual observances in Mexico City and at Ocotopec, an ancient cemetery outside of Cuernavaca. Rupture, grace, dislocation, and humanity inform the images. They ask for us to come closer, to take a moment, to consider. To remember.
